My teaching connects questions about media, communication and power with the institutions and technologies people encounter in everyday life.

I bring professional experience in journalism and institution building into the classroom while also using teaching as an opportunity to think with students about how communication shapes public life.

01 — TEACHING APPROACH

Connecting ideas to the world around us

I am interested in helping students connect what they encounter in media and communication every day with the larger institutions, histories and structures that shape them.

That often means moving between theory and practice: thinking about media systems, ownership, political communication and global communication while paying attention to how these questions appear in the world around us.

My professional experience gives me examples and questions to bring into the classroom. Teaching, in turn, gives me another space to reconsider some of the assumptions that emerge from professional practice.

03 — CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Beyond my own classroom

I have also contributed to a UNESCO-supported tertiary media-education initiative in The Gambia covering hate speech, fact-checking, media and disability, and artificial intelligence.

04 — RESEARCH, PRACTICE & TEACHING

Teaching sits alongside my research and professional work rather than apart from them. The classroom gives me another place to think about media, communication, institutions and power, while bringing questions from professional practice into conversation with academic ideas.
